Being an original surviving horn only the finish and decal have been addressed on this horn to make it presentable in your Parlor, Conservatory or Private Study. Upon my receipt the original paint finish on this horn had been previously removed in an unfortunate house fire. Since this horn has been around for generations it was only proper to give it new life. A new finish was applied and is sympathetic to the original. Please note that this finish is not perfect as any finish of the period would have some slight distressing so does this horn. All work was with the intent to make this look impressive and period correct with minor updating for longevity. Minor distressing hardly noticeable has been applied to this finish to give it an aged appearance. Keep in mind this example is sporting a finish using durable paint. (To clean this horn use only a mild diluted dish soap followed up with an immediate thorough drying with soft cotton or hair dryer on low heat. Use no alcohol, no solvents of any kind and avoid using any abrasives on the finish.)
The Hawthorne and Sheble reproduction decal is from our own collaboration of in-house graphic artists who create original artwork followed-up by still more highly skilled artisans who finesse the art, color correct, set the palette, and print in a durable resin medium. The label is as exact as possible. The difference between this decal and the original label is, originally the label substrate was paper (with a high acid content and so few original labels survive) and the paper label was affixed with hide glue to the horn originally. If you do find an original Hawthorne and Sheble label it most likely won't be legible. This horn's metal bell has minor imperfections, such as dents, dings, or bumps, but no seriously distracting or detracting flaws, no rust, no odd holes. It does appear the narrow hole closest to the machine has been trimmed slightly by previous owner, as sometimes, over the years the attachment point has small folds cramps or creases where it has been dropped or otherwise damaged through the life of the horn of the past hundred years. Sometimes owners don't understand that you have to have an elbow and a rubber hose to attach these to the reproducer on your Columbia or Edison phonograph and that lack of knowledge causes them to try to force it onto the reproducer which is not designed to directly connect as the reproducer moves and you have to have flexibility at the joint between the horn and the reproducer which can only be provided by a short piece of rubber hose. The photographs are taken in bright daylight to allow any flaws and perfections to be brought forth for your evaluation. Please take a good look at the photographs so you may be critical and may pass judgment to determine if this horn suitable for your quarters on your estate.
